Liping, a Bai ethnic, was born in Dali. In 1971, she started her dancing career
in Xishuangbanna Prefecture Song and Dance Troupe. She has since created a remarkable
repertoire, including a number of solo works and group dances. She was the lead
dancer in the grand ethnic dance musical 'Peacock Princess', which was
awarded Golden Award for Performing Art of Yunnan in 1979. In 1985, she joined
the Chinese Central Minority Song & Dance Troup and remains a prominent member
to date.In 1986, she choreographed, directed and performed the dance 'Soul
of Peacock', which is considered as her masterpiece. This won her the first
place in both choreographic creation and performance at the Second China Dance
Competition. In 1990, she performed this dance at the closing ceremony of the
11th Asian Games in Beijing. The audience was amazed by the high technical standards
of her dance and elegant presentation. In May 1992, Yang Liping became
the first dancer from Mainland China to visit Taiwan. At the 1993 Chinese New
Year Eve celebration gala night, the dance 'Two Trees' choreographed and
performed by her once again won the First Class award. In September 1994, she
was awarded the title of 'Outstanding Artist in Promoting Ethnic Unity and
Development' by the Chinese State Council. In December1994, the dance 'Spirit
of Peacock' was crowned with the Golden Award of Chinese 20th Century Classical
Work.
In 1998, the movie 'Sunbird', created, directed and starred
by Yang Liping herself, was given the Grand Jury's Award at the Montreal
Film Festival, Canada. Yang Liping also toured and performed around the
world. She conducted solo performances in Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, United
States, Canada, Japan and Taiwan. She is a life member of the Philippines National
Association of Folk Dance. Yang Liping's work reflects her discerning passion
in dance and is renowned for her high standard of technicality, individuality
and originality.
For her deep passion for dance and the natural attributes
of the Bai ethnic background, Yang Liping choreographed, directed and lead
danced the original, ethnic dance musical 'Dynamic Yunnan'. She spent over
one year to collect the essence of folk songs and dances from more than twenty
ethnic groups across Yunnan province. She used her individualistic style and original
angle of artistic creation over fifteen months to produce this authentic but contemporaneous
dance musical. Dynamic Yunnan exhibits a brand new style of choreography created
by Yang Liping that is an integration of authentic folkloric dance and
songs with modern form of artistic expression.
